The current file system HFS+ that every Apple products are using is a very old technology that was developed over 20 years ago. The technology was developed during the hard drive platters and floppy disks were popular. Since then, the storage technology has innovated from spinning disk to solid state disks. Now it’s time for Apple to create a new file system that can take advantages of the new storage technology.

Here is the definition of the new Apple File System listed on the Apple Developer’s document:

Apple File System is a new, modern file system for iOS, macOS, tvOS, and watchOS. It is optimized for Flash/SSD storage and features strong encryption, copy-on-write metadata, space sharing, cloning for files and directories, snapshots, fast directory sizing, atomic safe-save primitives, and improved file system fundamentals.

APFS replaces HFS+ as the default file system for iOS 10.3 and later, and macOS High Sierra and later.
